For the first year ever, I’m officially doing National November Novel Writing Month. I’m using the system to write 50,000 words (hopefully) in a month and complete a novel that’s been sitting half-done on a shelf for a couple of years. Today I went over all my outlines and character exercises, read all the old pages that I had already done, and generally overthought things. So, to combat the paralysis of analysis, I went onto Write or Die and had the screen yell at me if I stopped writing for any length of time. I wrote about 2000 words, which isn’t bad for the first day, since I tend to need a little ramp up time to really get going.
This is a lot harder than it looks! I can see why other people start a (simpler) project just for this competition. With all the characters and cultures I have going for Momentum, every page takes a lot of thought to do well. But, onward and upward! Anything I mess up the first time I can always fix in revision.
